In the 11th month of the 7th Guanghe year (late 184/early 185), Bao Hong and Dong Zhuo worked together to defeat the forces of Bian Zhang and Han Sui at Meiyang 美陽.[2] Bao Hong was the Commandant of the Garrison Cavalry (屯騎都尉, túnjí dūwèi) before he became a member of the Western Garden corps. In the 11th or 12th month of the 5th Zhongping year (late 188/early 189), Bao Hong was sent to Gebei 葛陂 to suppress the local Yellow Turbans there.[3] However, in the 3rd month of the 6th Zhongping year (189), he was convicted of crimes, imprisoned, and soon died.[4]
