Mi Zhu 麋竺 was a civil official who served Liu Bei. He inherited and built up an extreme amount of gold from his family business, using it to support Liu Bei. He was staunchly loyal to him, refusing titles from Cao Cao intended to entice him.

Biography[]

Mi Zhu came from a family of extremely rich merchants, having around ten thousand servants as well as hundreds of millions in wealth.[1] Mi Zhu was very talented in riding a horse whilst shooting arrows; this talent was inherited by his son and grandson.[2]

When Mi Fang, Mi Zhu's brother, surrendered to Sun Quan's forces, Mi Zhu had himself tied up and faced Liu Bei, asking that he be punished. Liu Bei declined and comforted him, saying that a brother should not be punished for the actions of the other, and treated him extremely well like before. However, Mi Zhu was still ashamed of Mi Fang's actions, developed an illness, and died some years later.[3]
