Yuan Xu 袁叙 was Yuan Shao's younger cousin who served as Grand Administrator of Jiyin. Cao Cao claimed that he urged his cousin to become Emperor, attributing this message to him which stated, "Now those within the seas are decaying and perishing. Heaven's will is actually in our family and the divine response has been decided, that it should be with you, esteemed personage! The southern personage, your minister, wants to have you ascend the throne. In my words, whatever my years, you, northern personage, are older; whatever my position, you, northern personage, are superior. I thus intended to deliver the seal, but it happened Cao Cao blocked the route."[1]
